First, the rule that changes the plan
Naples airport is closed from 22:30 to 04:00, except when flights are delayed, and the official information is explicit: you cannot spend the night in the terminal waiting for your flight. There is no 24-hour landside area to sit in, and no sleeping pods inside security.
That single fact decides three common situations:
- Landing at 22:50 with an onward journey the next morning: you leave the airport and you need a bed.
- Departing at 06:20: you cannot arrive at midnight and wait inside. The first Alibus bus is at 05:30, which is already too late for that flight.
- A long layover with an overnight gap: you go out, or you do not sleep.
Who actually needs a hotel near the airport
- Early departures, roughly anything before 08:00, especially if your holiday is on the Amalfi Coast or the islands and the journey to the airport takes an hour or more.
- Late arrivals after about 22:00, when the coast buses have stopped, the last hydrofoil has sailed and the road to Sorrento at midnight is neither cheap nor pleasant.
- Overnight layovers between two flights.
- Cruise passengers with an early embarkation at the port, who prefer to land the day before.
- Travellers renting a car the next morning: the rental desks and the shuttle to the car park operate from the morning, and starting the drive rested is worth more than the room.

On the question people actually ask, which is which area is safe: the streets immediately around the station and the airport are ordinary working neighbourhoods, busy by day and quiet at night. Use the same common sense you would in any large city, prefer a hotel with a lit entrance and a 24-hour reception if you arrive late, and take a taxi rather than walking with luggage after dark. The historic centre, Chiaia and the seafront are the areas most visitors choose for a longer stay.
The eight questions to ask before booking
Ask them in writing, by email or through the booking platform's message system, and keep the answers.
- Is there an airport shuttle, and what time does the first run leave? Many properties advertise one that starts at 06:00 or 07:00, which is useless for a 06:30 flight. Ask for the exact times, not for a yes.
- Is the shuttle free, and does it need booking? Some charge per person, some need 24 hours' notice.
- Until what time can I check in? If you land at 23:30 and reception closes at midnight, you need a self check-in code. Ask how it works.
- What time does breakfast start? For a dawn flight you need it at 04:30 or 05:00, which almost nobody serves: ask whether they prepare a bag to take away.
- Can I leave a car, and for how many days? Many include parking only for the night of the stay, not for the two weeks of your trip.
- Is there luggage storage before check-in or after check-out?
- How is the room for noise? Scheduled flights do not operate at night, so aircraft are not the problem, but the roads around the airport are busy. Ask for a room facing the courtyard.
- What is the cancellation policy? Flights change: a refundable rate is worth the few euros extra.
What it costs: remember the city tax
Naples charges a tourist tax per person, per night, for up to 14 consecutive nights, on top of the room price. From 1 May 2026:

It is usually collected at the property and not included in the price shown online. For a family of four it adds more than €20 to a single night, which is worth checking when two options look identical.
When to book, and what moves the price
Naples handled 13.3 million passengers in 2025, and more than 4.3 million of them between June and August. That concentration shows up in room prices around the airport:
- June to September, Christmas, Easter and long weekends: the properties with a shuttle sell out first, because everyone with a dawn flight wants them. Book one or two weeks ahead, and expect the last rooms to be the expensive ones.
- November to February, outside the holidays: you can book a few days before and pay noticeably less.
- Any time of year: if your flight leaves before 07:00 or lands after 23:00, book early anyway. In those hours the alternative is not a cheaper hotel, it is an expensive taxi or a long wait outside a closed terminal.
One more detail that catches people out: a room near the airport is a functional purchase, not a holiday choice. Judge it on the shuttle times, the check-in hours and a quiet room, not on the photographs. The nice hotel goes at the other end of the trip.
Cruise passengers and early ferry departures
If you are sailing rather than flying the next morning, the airport area is often the wrong choice. Ships leave from the Stazione Marittima at Molo Angioino, next to the hydrofoil terminal, and hydrofoils to Capri and Ischia leave from Molo Beverello alongside it. From the airport that is 35 minutes by Alibus or a €24 taxi on the fixed fare.
With an embarkation in the morning, staying near piazza Municipio or the central station puts you 5 to 15 minutes from the gangway instead of 35, and the same hotels serve the airport well for the return. If you land late and sail early, ask your hotel whether they can hold luggage on the morning of departure: most do, and it saves a second trip.
Getting to the terminal at five in the morning
Decide this the night before, not when the alarm goes off:
- Hotel shuttle: the easiest, if it runs at your hour.
- Taxi: from the station area the flat fare is €21, less from the areas closest to the airport. Book it the evening before: at 04:30 you will not find one by waiting on the street.
- Alibus: from 05:30 only, €5 per person, so it works for flights from roughly 07:30 onwards.
- On foot: possible from the closest properties, but check the route in daylight first and think twice with heavy cases.

Five mistakes we see repeatedly
- Planning to sleep in the terminal. It closes at 22:30. This is the mistake that ruins the night.
- Booking a hotel "near the airport" that is 8 kilometres away with no shuttle, then paying €25 for a taxi at dawn.
- Not checking the first shuttle time. A shuttle at 06:00 does not serve a 06:30 flight.
- Assuming parking is included for the whole trip. Usually it covers one night only.
- Forgetting the city tax when comparing two rates that look the same online.
