Naples airport at a glance
Naples airport is officially Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli - Ugo Niutta, its airline code is NAP, and it stands in the Capodichino district on viale Fulco Ruffo di Calabria. That is why locals call it simply Capodichino.
The airport's great advantage is the location: it is inside the city, and the shuttle bus reaches Naples central station in about 15 minutes. There is no long train ride from a distant airport town.
In 2025 it handled 13.3 million passengers, a record and a 5% rise on the previous year, which made it Italy's fourth busiest airport. International traffic passed 9.8 million and flights to the United States grew by 58%. Between June and August alone more than 4.3 million people passed through. In practice: in summer and around public holidays expect longer security queues, fuller buses and higher prices on everything you book late.
Getting from Naples airport to the city centre

Alibus: the cheap and simple choice
Alibus is the airport shuttle run by the city transport company, ANM. The ticket costs €5 and the integrated UNICO ALIBUS version is valid for 90 minutes on the other city transport of the same consortium, which is handy if you continue by metro or funicular.
- Route: airport, Piazza Garibaldi (central station), Immacolatella/Porta di Massa, Molo Angioino/Beverello.
- Times: first departure 05:30 from the airport and from the port; last departure from the airport at midnight, from the port at 23:35.
- Frequency: up to one bus every 15 minutes.
- Where to buy: on board from the driver, at the machines in the arrivals area, at the station, on the airport website, through the UnicoCampania, MyCicero and Gira Napoli apps, at authorised retailers and at the ANM Point in Piazza Garibaldi.
For one or two people travelling light it is unbeatable: two tickets cost €10 against €21 for a taxi.
Taxis: fixed fares, no meter surprises
The taxi rank is in front of arrivals, a short walk from the exit. Naples city council sets flat fares to and from the airport:
- Central station: €21
- Port, Molo Beverello, piazza Municipio: €24
- Centro Direzionale: €21
These fares include the airport surcharge, night service, public holidays, luggage and pets. They do not include motorway tolls or a radio taxi call-out. Fixed fares also exist for destinations outside the city, such as Pompeii and Caserta.
Practical advice: say your destination and ask for the flat fare before you set off. If something does not add up, note the CP licence number displayed in the car, which is what any complaint refers to.
Shared taxi: €6 per person
The least known option and often the best value if you are travelling alone with luggage. It connects the airport, the central station and the port for €6 per person, with no meter. The car leaves 15 minutes after the first three passengers have arrived, so you trade a little patience for a lower price. The service runs until 31 December 2026.
Private transfer: when it is worth it
A pre-booked transfer costs more than a taxi but makes sense in three situations: late-night arrivals, families or groups with a lot of luggage, and above all destinations outside Naples, where the price is agreed in advance and the driver tracks your flight and waits if you land late.
Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and the islands
Most travellers landing in Naples are heading somewhere else. Here is how each route works.
- Sorrento. There is a direct bus from the airport operated by Curreri Viaggi: about 80 minutes, luggage included, a ticket around €10, several departures a day, bought online or on board. Timetables change through the year, so check the operator's site the day before. The alternative is Alibus to Piazza Garibaldi and then the Circumvesuviana train, which is awkward with suitcases, or a private transfer.
- Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. No convenient direct service: you go through Sorrento or Salerno. With luggage, a private transfer saves the most time, and in high season it should be booked in advance.
- Pompeii. By public transport: Alibus to Piazza Garibaldi, then the Circumvesuviana line towards Sorrento to the ruins stop. Taxis have a fixed fare to Pompeii as well: ask the driver for it before leaving.
- Capri, Ischia and Procida. You go through the port: hydrofoils leave from Molo Beverello and ferries from Calata Porta di Massa. Allow at least two hours between landing and your boat: baggage reclaim alone can take 20-30 minutes in peak periods, and the airport-to-port ride is 35 minutes by Alibus.
- Salerno. Alibus to the central station, then a train: the quickest and most frequent combination.
The metro station: not open yet
Line 1 of the Naples metro will have a station at the airport, underground and about 50 metres deep. Works were more than 95% complete in November 2025.
According to press reports the station opens between the end of 2026 and early 2027, at first served by shuttle buses to the Tribunale metro station, with trains reaching the airport in 2027. Until then, plan with Alibus, taxis or a transfer. The opening date has already moved several times, so check the news before relying on it.
The night closure that catches people out
This is the single most useful thing to know: Naples airport is closed from 22:30 to 04:00, except when flights are delayed, and the official information states clearly that you cannot spend the night in the terminal waiting for a flight. Scheduled flights do not operate during those hours because the airport sits in a residential part of the city.
What it means for your plans:
- landing at 22:50 with a connection the next morning means leaving the airport;
- a 06:20 departure cannot be handled by arriving at midnight and waiting inside;
- the first Alibus at 05:30 is too late for a flight before roughly 07:30, so an early departure needs a taxi, a hotel shuttle or a pre-booked transfer.

How early to arrive
There is no universal rule, but this schedule keeps you out of trouble:
- Domestic and European flights: airlines generally advise being at the airport two hours before departure.
- Long-haul flights: three hours.
- Summer, weekends and public holidays: add half an hour. With 4.3 million passengers in three summer months, security is where the time goes.
- If you park and use a shuttle: add another 20-30 minutes.
- Hand luggage only and a boarding pass on your phone: you can stay at the lower end of these times.
Always check your airline's own limits: many close bag drop 40 minutes and the gate 20 minutes before departure.
Driving to the airport and parking
If you are driving, the question is where to leave the car. The airport has several official car parks, from short stay in front of departures to a super low cost area 700 metres away with a free shuttle, and private car parks with shuttles operate nearby.

Two useful details: the P1, P3 and Multipiano car parks accept Telepass payment in a dedicated lane, and the Multipiano has 44 free reserved spaces for disabled travellers.
Accessibility and assistance
Assistance at the airport and on board is arranged through your airline, when you book or at least 48 hours before departure: the airline informs the airport and organises the wheelchair, escort and priority boarding. If you need an accessible vehicle from the airport, book a transfer in advance and say so: finding one among the waiting taxis is not guaranteed.
When assistance is booked, arrive half an hour earlier than the times above, because the service is collected at dedicated desks.
Money and tickets: small things worth knowing
- City tax. If you stay in Naples you pay a tourist tax per person per night, from €4.00 to €6.00 depending on the type of accommodation, for up to 14 consecutive nights. It is often charged at the property and not included in the price you see online.
- Bus tickets must be validated when you board; the integrated ticket covers 90 minutes on city transport.
- Taxi receipts. Ask for one, especially on a flat fare: it carries the licence number.
- Cash. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but a few euros in cash still help for a bus ticket bought at a kiosk.
